Kelo-Cote: Does Kelo-Cote Work?

While silicone gels have been proven effective at reducing the appearance of hypertrophic and Keloid scars, Kelo-cote Scar Gel may not me the best option in over-the-counter scar treatments available due to the uncertainty surrounding its formulation, small size and negative results from users.

In the 1980’s silicone sheets were widely used to treat scars, as silicone is the one ingredient that had been shown to be effective in reducing the appearance of scars and the sheets were all that was available. However, advances in science and medicine have made silicone gels accessible to all. Silicone gels are easier to use than the sheets as they form an instant barrier you do not have to worry about coming off throughout the day and can be used on any part of the body. With Kelo-cote, though, there is no way of knowing what exactly is in it. Their website states that it contains “bio-inert and bio-compatible silicone compounds, namely polysiloxane, silicone dioxide and non-volatile silicone components.” That is the extent of an ingredient list that is available. They also do not list if there are any allergies to Kelo-cote. There have also been reports that this product does not dry like it should and stays sticky throughout the day.

The Verdict on Kelo-cote
While there is plenty of evidence that supports the efficacy of silicone in treating scars of all types and ages, there is still more information that is needed for this product. Even though the product website tries to give information on their product, there are still gaps in the information that need to be filled in. There are many negative Kelo-cote reviews that state that this product does not work like it claims. This is only compounded by the fact that the tubes come in small sizes, meaning many tubes are necessary to achieve the desired results, especially with large scars.
